Instant Pot Black Bean Soup

By now, you should realize I have an obsession with my Instant Pot, I LOVE IT! Seeing as so many people have been asking me about what recipes I make in it, how I use it, etc, I decided to do this Instant Pot Cooking Series.  As I started thinking about this awesome appliance that I can no longer live without, I thought it would be in your best interest and mine to convert some of my original recipes to use for the Instant Pot.  One of the comments I get the most when I am telling friends or clients about this appliance is “you have to give me a recipe” and by that, everyone wants step by step instructions and which setttings to use the Instant Pot.  My black bean soup recipe is one of my most asked for recipes, its easy, inexpensive to make, healthy, and filling, so I thought this would be a great one to give to you with instructions for the Instant Pot.


  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 cups chicken broth or vegetable broth
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 bags dried black beans (picked over to remove the cracked beans and rinsed and soaked overnight)
  • 4 carrots
  • 1 red pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 2 bay leaves
  • TOPPINGS (of your choice)– minced cilantro, shredded cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, sour cream, salsa, chopped avocado, sliced limes


  1. Turn Instant Pot on and hit the Sauté button– it heats quickly, so after about 2 minutes it will be ready.  Add in the olive oil ad the onion and sauté for about 2 minutes, stirring.  Be careful, the metal insert gets hot so use a pot holder.  Add in the garlic, chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper and stir.
  2. At this point, add in the chicken broth, water, black beans, carrots, red peppers, and bay leaves.  Stir together.
  3. Place lid on, lock in place and set your Instant Pot to the {soup} setting.  Once you hear the beep your black bean soup has started to cook.  After it is done, remove lid and take out the bay leaves.  Stir, spoon in to a bowl and top with your favorite toppings.  It is that easy!

  1. I’ve made Kristin’s black bean chili several times. It’s healthy and a crowd pleaser. I add more chicken broth because I like a thinner chili. Thanks for sharing!
